Brit adds Broken Back Ranch SDT Overall Champion and a Sunday win to her Canadian National Championship Win in Kingston, Ontario

britc54.jpg

Brit won the second go round of the Broken Back Ranch Sheep Dog Trial in Cowpens, South Carolina with a stellar score of 99 out of 100.  She also captured the Overall Championship beating out Dawn Boyce's Giordi by 4 points.  In August, Brit posted her most impressive victory by besting 126 dogs in Kingston Ontario at the Canadian National Championship.  As of December 14, 2008 Brit is ranked #5 in the USBCHA Sheep Dog Rankings.

Luke, Jake, Brit, Celt, and Jen ready for a good days work

It all started with seeing a sheep dog trial on the Virginia Tech campus in 1995, then buying a puppy, then two, then a farm, sheep, and the list goes on.  Watching a working Border Collie manage stock is for many a spiritual experience, and for all others, simply a thing of wonder.  We are blessed with several national caliber working dogs and several young ones on the way.

We love to "talk dogs".  If you are thinking about getting a Border Collie for a working farm dog, to do agility, or simply to be a pet, please feel free to call us.  Protecting the working Border Collie is important to us and even if you are looking for a pet, you can do your part to help ensure that the working Border Collie remains with us for generations to come.

Although we do not sell many dogs, I enjoy putting people and good dogs together.  I will be happy to assist you in finding a trained dog, a puppy from good lines, or even a rescue dog.  Please be a part of protecting and preserving the working Border Collie.

Pete, our Jack Russell Terrier, likes to think of himself as just a bit above all of the Border Collies.  However, against his protest, we will not show him on this page.  If you are interested in meeting Pete and his adventures on the farm and on the road, please click on "Pete's Page" and he will tell you all about them.  Pete's Page

jake001.jpg

Jake is now 8 years old and comes from Western Canadian breeding (Dale Montgomery, Norm Close and others).  I purchased Jake from Alasdair MacRae shortly after his nursery campaign in which Scott Glen ran him at the USBCHA National Finals.

Jake is a tough dog with a lot of drive.  As essentially my first dog, his early days with me did not do much to foster a great deal of respect  to me and to this day I am paying for it.  He is rather pushy, mostly as a result of not getting a handle on him early, with nice flanks and one of the best outruns on the sheep dog circuit.  He works both sheep and cattle and has won major trials in both venues.

Jake is the 2005 USBCHA National Reserve Champion Cattle Dog, the 2005 National All-Around Stockdog (combined placements at the National Sheepdog Finals and the National Cattledog Finals).  He finished in 3rd place in 2006 and is the 2007 National Reserve Champion All-Around Stockdog.  His greatest Championship win was the 2006 Canadian National Championship Qualifying Round which was held at the famed Grass Creek Sheep Dog Trial in Kingston Ontario.

Jake, Don, and Joecia at the Poker Table
jakepoker.jpg

Jake is our second working Border Collie.  Mirk was our first.  Mirk was an exceptionally biddable and responsive dog, but was weak and moved the sheep very slowly.  The perfect dog for someone just learning.  Mirk and I won many novice trials and seldom did we ever place out of the ribbons.  However, it was clear that Mirk was not a dog to be competitive in the Open ranks, thus, Alasdair located Jake for me.  Mirk died shortly thereafter leaving me with a hot, hard-headed, pushy, and tough stockdog.

Without dependable Mirk, I had to learn how to run Jake.  It has been quite the journey.  Although he is an exceptional dog, the mistakes I made in my early days with him still haunt me today.  He would be far more outstanding had he had a more capable handler in those early days.

However, it is because of Jake and the lessons I learned from him that I have been able to train two other Open dogs and have had success with my two nursery dogs.  I learned a great deal from Mirk, probably much more than I realize.  However, Jake has taught me how to deal with a "real" dog and the importance of establishing a relationship of respect from the first day on the farm and how to "handle" a dog on the trial field.

Jake has only been bred one time previously to Steve McCall's Tish II.  I have a female from the litter, Jen, who is as tough as nails and a real joy to work.  See more about her below.

We anticipate breeding Jake to Brit when she comes into heat next.  Two females and one male is already reserved from this litter.  Please contact me if interested in reserving a puppy from this litter.

KAID - Our Newest Addition

kaidandmolly.jpg

kaidwithsomethingtosay.jpg

Kaid is the newest addition to Border Springs Farm.  Kaid is named after our first grandson, Kaiden.  He is a Celt x Babe puppy.  Babe is from Kent Kuykendall's Coon with Hubert Bailey's Jose and Nancy Schreeder's Sweep in her lines.  We are hoping that little Kaid will take after both Kaiden and Celt in their good looks, Kaiden's intellegence, and Celt's easy handling and command of both cattle and sheep.  Only time will tell.

celt.jpg

Celt at work on the trial field
celtcalf.jpg

Celt is a special boy on our farm.  He was a gift from our friend Gina Kirwan.  Celt is a son of Toss (owned by Gina) and a dog some say was the most spectacular stockdog they have ever seen.   Unfortunately, I never saw Toss run.  Vergil Holland placed 2nd with Toss at the Meeker Classic and had a disappointing Championship Round (top 20 finsih however) at the USBCHA National Sheep Dog Finals.

Celt is out of Rusty Krieder's Dally.  The sheep love him and his square flanks have given us lots of opportunities to win trials.  Celt is also a tough cattledog.  He has a good head on him and never loses his cool when working cattle.  He just may be the best heeling dog I have ever seen.  On command, Celt will turn his head to the side, scrape the gorund with his cheek, and give a measured grip low on the hock.  It is a sight to see.

Celt placed 3rd in the first qualifying round of the 2006 National Cattle Dog Finals in Big Lake, Texas and was the National Reserve Champion All-Around Stock Dog for the year as well.  He is a crowd pleaser with his regal look.  He also loves for the crowd to come up to him and pet him...he just loves the attention.

A local cattle rancher and friend, Jim Smith, has bred his bitch, Babe, to Celt and we are expecting the puppies in the middle of October.  Babe is a dog from Kent Kuykendall lines with dogs from Nancy Schreeder and Hubert Baileys famed Jose in her pedigree.    Jim has always loved the way that Celt manages the cattle, his toughness and courage, and his cool head.  We are hopeful that these characteristics will be passed down to Celt's offspring.

Luke

luke-on-the-march.jpg

Luke has begun to establish himself as the number 1 dog on the farm.  He is tough and calm.  Luke works both sheep and cattle with great success.

Luke is a "line dog".  He has a great deal of "eye" with which he can control sheep with just the turn of the head.  This makes him a first class trial dog and the results over the past year indicate just that.  He put on a show in the shedding ring at the Grass Creek Sheep Dog Trial in Kingston, Ontario this past summer.  Although we did not complete the shed, he showed command of the sheep with a calm demeanor and cool head that indicates that he will find himself at the top of Internation style final rounds in the near future.  His 6th place finish (out of 120 dogs) behind Amanda Milliken and Beverly Lambert's Pippa has no shame in it.

Luke is our first choice for farm chores.  He simply knows what the job is and it is always accomplished with little fan-fare or drama.  He just gets the job done quietly.

Luke, like Jake, is out of Western Canadian breeding.  He is the half-brother to Debbie Bailey's (GA) Ben.  He has sired one litter, with Dwight Parker's Trixie.  Dwight kept a male puppy, Craig,  from the litter, who as a 2 year old placed in the top 5 in the National Cattle Dog Nursery Finals in Torrington, WY.  Craig is one of the best young dogs I have seen.  Watch for him at the 2008 USBCHA National Nursery Finals in May.

Brit Wins Second Round of Canadian National Championship at Grass Creek in Kingston, Ontario

withroddy.jpg

Brit had a spectacular debute after weaning her puppies by winning the second round of the Canadian National Championship at Grass Creek in Kingston, Ontario.  She bested 125 other dogs from across Canada and the United States on one of the most picturesque fields in North America, running some of the williest sheep on the sheep dog circuit.  The Wapoose Island sheep are well known for their cunning and elusive behavior that challenges dog and handler alike.

Brit joins our Jake as winners of a qualifying round at the Canadian National Championships held in Kingston, as Jake won in 2006, the last time the Canadian National Championships were held in Eastern Canada.

Jake performed well at the tune-up trial the weekend before the Canadian National Champions placing second to Bev Lambert and Mirk at Landsdowne, Ontario.

(Craig and Brit are shown with Judge, Rodney McDowell of Scotland in the picture to the left)

babybrit.jpg

Brit is a striking little girl.  Only 3 years old she is quietly positioning herself as the best dog in our kennel and a real champion.  She is the only Nursery dog (3 years and under) who has ever placed in the top 10 at both the USBCHA National Cattle Dog Finals and the USBCHA National Sheep Dog Finals.

She is out of RC Tomlinson's (TN) Dat and by Alasdair MacRae's (MO) Laddie.  She is a very stylish bitch with a nice pace that needs just the slightest bit of attention.  She has plenty of power and push and works the top end of the field on her own with grace.

Brit has a very striking single black-leg, the other three are white, that gives her that something extra that people notice quickly.  With a bit more time doing farm chores and some mileage, she could easily become the top dog in the kennel.  The question is, which of the three Open dogs; Jake, Celt, and Luke, do I retire to give her a chance in Open?

Jen (Jake's daughter) Places Third at USBCHA National Cattledog Nursery Finals
Craig (Luke's son) Places Second

jennurseryfinals.jpg

Jen, daughter of Jake, the 2005 USBCHA National Cattledog Reserve Champion and 2005 All-Around Stock Dog of the Year, placed third in the 2008 USBCHA National Cattle Dog Nursery Finals in Torrington, WY.  Luke placed in the top 10 in qualifying for the Double Lift Finals in Open at the 2008 Finals.

Craig, son of Luke, run by Dwight Parker (NC) placed second to become the 2008 USBCHA National Cattledog Reserve Champion.  This is Dwight Parker's second National Reserve Champion Nursery title.  Dwight did a repeat breeding of Luke x Trixie (Craig's parents) and the new litter was born in early May.

jennurseryfinals.jpg

How can so much dog fit into such a small package?  Jen is a firecracker.  She is fast - and square.  From the age of 12 weeks, it has been a struggle for us to keep her from going under, through, and over fences to get to "her" sheep.  She lives to work.

Jen is sired by our Jake and out of Steve McCall's Tish II (from Henry Hinton).  Steve has a brother to Jen, Henry, that we may see at the 2008 USBCHA National Nursery Finals.  As a very young 2 year old, Jen placed 11th at the 2007 USBCHA National Cattle Dog Nursery Finals in Torrington, WY.  With a bit of help from me at the chute, if I had just checked my watch, we could have placed in the top 10; but "that is dog trialing" as they say.

dogem.jpg

Jen qualified for the 2007 USBCHA National Sheep Dog Finals in Gettysburg, PA and did a wonderful job with her gather and the first leg of the drive before the sheep finally won and I decided that "my little girl" had done enough work for the day and did not need "more experience" at the National Finals and we retired. I was still proud of her work and more miles will do her wonders.

The acorn did not fall from the tree.  She has a lot of Jake in her.  Working on her pace is a daily training experience but we will never have to worry about leaving sheep at the top of the field.  I would say that her youthful exuberence will temper with age, but then again, Jake acts like a puppy seeing sheep for the first time at the age of 8, so I am not holding my breath.

Although she is a handful, I laugh and smile everytime I take her out to work.  There are not many dogs on the planet that demonstrate what it means to be "working dog" and how it is simply cemented in their DNA.  She would rather work stock than breath...oh what a joy she is.
